Luxury gardens in Sotogrande: What is behind the landscaping?

With the evolution of landscaping in Sotogrande, keeping the garden of a luxury villa radiant is no easy task. That’s why we met with WAKU Garden, a landscaping and property maintenance company with more than 15 years of experience.

Its services include maintenance of gardens, swimming pools, cleaning and conservation. The areas they cover are: Sotogrande, San Roque, Algeciras, La Línea, Los Barrios, Tarifa, Castellar, Jimena, Manilva, Sabinilla, Estepona, San Pedro and Marbella.

For this reason, Charles Gubbins visited David Martín, the owner of WAKU Garden, at his premises in Sotomarket to tell us about his career.

1. What inspired you to enter the world of gardening? How did you get into this world?

In September of the year 1997, I was lucky enough to be able to work at the Valderrama Golf Club for the prestigious “Ryder Cup” golf tournament. Once I was doing the work I observed that it was very rewarding. Just at that moment I thought I would dedicate myself to the world of gardening.

2. How has Waku Garden developed. Since when you have your own company in Sotogrande. How has it has evolved?

Fifteen years ago, the company Waku Garden was founded without knowing what trajectory this project would follow. Little by little we evolved thanks to the trust placed in us by the clients, at the beginning we only had the gardening service and pool and with the passage of time to meet the needs of our customers we incorporated cleaning maintenance.

As a last point, just say that we are always evolving and improving to be able to offer our customers everything they need, we have recently added another section to our company that is the Property Management.

In summary, what started 15 years ago as a gardening company in which I only worked, has become a gardening, cleaning and property company in which I am accompanied by a wonderful team.

3. What is your opinion of gardening companies in general in Sotogrande. Are they mostly well-known people from the area or companies from afar?

The supply of gardening companies in Sotogrande is very wide, and we have a large number from both outside and local. This high number is positive since we have to be constantly improving and working to be able to offer the best services to the client.

4. How is the seasonality of the year handled in your industry? More work in summer or winter?

In our company we have to maintain the gardens and swimming pools throughout the year, but it is true that in the spring and the summer season there is more work.

Since, as a general rule, people enjoy their gardens more during these times and we are not only maintaining the garden, but planting new plants to make the gardens more attractive, and preparing them for owners to enjoy.

5. How has the designs of gardens evolved in recent years.

Before we found gardens with a more rustic design and with the passage of time the properties have been evolving towards a more modern style. This has followed the newer architecture that is evolving, and thus the garden designs have been adapted to these new properties. As the garden designs evolve so do the necessary materials such as grass. There are new types of grass specific to our climate that make the performance of the garden more effective.

6. Any other comments you want to make?

The world of gardening is a world in which we must always evolve to provide the best services. Our company is constantly carrying out courses and being informed about new machinery, phytosanitary products, new diseases, swimming pool performance … etc. All this gives a confidence to the client that makes our company can continue to evolve.
