Inviting Terraces in Sotogrande
After going through the state of alarm, lockdown, confinement, whatever you call it, when we all basically stayed at home in Sotogrande. Some of us are lucky enough to have a garden, but others may only have a balcony..
In our particular case Stephanie and I are fortune as we have a large terrace, which over the past weeks has become not only our outdoor place, but also our gym amongst other things.
Dependant on your terrace size it can be as little as an extended outdoor dining area to an extended lounge with seating and sun beds; maybe even a garden. How therefore, can we best make a terrace in Sotogrande as inviting as possible and practical to use year-round? This is very personal of course, but some fundamentals must be considered.
Firstly, the weather. The manner in which the sun shines and the wind blows on your terrace throughout the day is an important factor, especially in Sotogrande. Too much sun could make your outdoor space intolerable in summer months, and no sun, would render it cold and uncomfortable. During the summer months shade is welcome particularly west facing terraces when the sun will hit hard well into the evening. A feature such as awnings will protect us from the sun and wind and will create a more intimate space. To extend use of a terrace in spring and autumn in Sotogrande, outdoor heaters are a good solution.
Secondly, mood. Furniture styles and cushions give a casual touch to a terrace. They are an essential part because they invite one to rest. Also lights such as lanterns and solar spotlights in plant pots provide mood and relaxation.
Thirdly, vegetation. A few shrubs with aromatic plants such as lavender, mint or rosemary will perfume the environment naturally and also your dishes. Plants help to provide colour, refresh, and can be located to provide privacy. With enough space, even fruit trees are possible to keep in Sotogrande. Lemons and limes also come in handy at Gin Tonic time!
During lockdown our terrace became somewhat of a salvation. Getting out into the fresh air is important for mental health as well as physical health. We are grateful!
