Could Sotogrande become a Zoom town in 2021?

It seems that life has being sucked out of the big cities. Teleworking means people do not commute to work, and consequently do not need all the services that support the vast numbers of commuters around the world. I refer to city transport, restaurants, bars and convenience stores to mention just a few, all suffering and in decline.

City workplaces are the losers with suburbs gaining, as both employers and employees accept and, in many cases, prefer remote working. Irrespective of the miracle vaccine coming soon, many of us are reconsidering where to live, looking for a greener existence both metaphorically as well as literally.

I recently read a blog where the writer was highlighting reasons why 20 random European destinations were good to live in, work from, and albeit occasionally, commute to a head office somewhere in Europe. Criteria used to judge a location included the following:

Enviable quality of life, gastronomy, good flight connections, reasonable cost of living, low crime rate, good schools, cultural life options, good health care, beaches, outdoor sports, conviviality and family, spectacular views, stability and good economic health, 330 sunny days a year, quality of internet network, nightlife, enjoys a competitive price per meter square, cosmopolitan, good security, water sports, closeness to nature.

I was disappointed not to see Sotogrande on the list of 20 destinations, as closely examining the listed reasons, albeit they are very subjective, I would say Sotogrande scores pretty well against most.

Enviable quality of life: Like love, quality of life is in the eye of the beholder. So, if you want tranquillity, amazing weather, clean air, closeness to sea and mountains, ana an outdoor lifestyle to enjoy with your family in a secure environment…then Sotogrande scores a 10.

Gastronomy: Maybe not Sotogrande’s best suit, but still there is ample variety of restaurants offering some kind of speciality.

Good flight connections: Malaga airport is and hour away, Gibraltar only 20 minutes, and then Jerez and Sevilla are also within 2 hours’ drive. Never heard of anyone complaining about lack of flight options.

Reasonable cost of living: True. Sotogrande is not an expensive place to live in.

Low crime rate: True. There is very little crime in or around Sotogrande.

Good schools: The Sotogrande International Schools has a very good reputation. Offering IB (International Baccalaureate). Graduates go on to top universities all over the world.

Cultural life options: If you are looking for west end ballet, opera, theatres, art galleries and museums, then Sotogrande not for you. Proximity to Sevilla and Malaga does offer the opportunity to enjoy touring spectacles.

⚕️ Good health care: Health care in Spain is good. Private healthcare is no problem with many options available. The national health care system is also good.
Beaches: The Mediterranean beaches close to Sotogrande may not be the best in the world but are quite adequate and safe. The Atlantic coast, less than an hour away offers world class beaches particularly in Tarifa. Kite surfers visit from all over the world.
Conviviality and family life: Family life is possibly synonymous with Sotogrande’s DNA. Its founders created Sotogrande to be a family-oriented resort, and nearly sixty years on it continues to deliver this attribute.

☀ 330 sunny days a year: Maybe not 330 but certainly 300.

Quality of internet network: 100%. With fibre optic service Sotogrande enjoys state of the art internet.

Nightlife: Sotogrande nightlife is limited to restaurants, a few bars, and home entertaining. There are no nightclubs in Sotogrande. If they want to party residents travel to Marbella (only 30 mins away) and return home to tranquillity.

Enjoys a competitive price per meter square: Property prices in Sotogrande are very competitive when compared to the popular neighbourhoods of Marbella.

✨ Cosmopolitan: You will find people from all nationalities in Sotogrande.

Good security: Sotogrande is a gated community. All vehicles entering must pass a guard house where cars are monitored.

⛳ Sports: Golf, Polo, and water sports feature very high in the sports offering. Three of the top ten golf courses in Spain are in Sotogrande. The polo world descends on Sotogrande in the summer, with many Polo farms located vary close by.

As you can see, Sotogrande offers everything you need to live the good life, and is exceptionally suited to the new normal. This makes it the ideal place as a second home or as a main residence. We are here to help you find a property and to help you settle into the joyful Sotogrande lifestyle.
