Is Social Media really food for us?

Is social media really good for us?

I no longer belong to the younger generation, for whom it is unimaginable to live without social media. The generation above my age generally rejects social media because they believe that facebook or Instagram are dangerous, as strangers can potentially gain access to personal data or even bank accounts via such media.

Social media encompasses a wide range of platforms and applications that are used to communicate, share and interact with others. Here are some of these platforms:

– Social networking platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter.

– Photo and video sharing such as Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube

– Messaging and communication apps such as WhatsApp, Wechat, Telegram…

Of course, social media is a way to pass on news on a global level. Especially when it comes to family and friends who live far away.

With WhatsApp, you can communicate with each other as often as you like for free. On platforms like Facebook, you can share your experiences or advice, or find solidarity support in common interests.

Social media represents diverse views or cultures that can ultimately be captured on a global level.

Social media is a way to make instant updates, making it easy to stay current. Social media can raise awareness of social issues, express themselves creatively, and share their stories with a wider audience.

Negative aspects :

All of these activities often get a reputation for being superficial, as messages are often forwarded in too abbreviated a form, and thus do not represent the full reality.

What can probably be considered ‘dangerous’ is that these social media can be addictive, causing people to spend excessive amounts of time scrolling rather than engaging in real connections.

Social media often only showcases a person’s best moments, and often people flaunt themselves through photoshop or AI, which can lead to viewers seeing themselves as inadequate with a lack of self-confidence, and isolating themselves from the everyday world.

So is social media good or bad for us?

It depends on how it is used. For those who use it mindfully and strike a balance between online interactions and offline connections, it can be a powerful tool for communication and community building. However, if overused or relied upon for validation, its drawbacks can outweigh its benefits.

The key is in the intention: social media should be used as a complement to, not a substitute for, real human relationships.

It also happens to me that I can lose track of time with amazement, interest, and fascination about the various posts from all over the world on Instagram.
